This month we are proud to be supporting another amazing organization with a laudable and heartwarming goal. Knit for Life helps support cancer patients and their caregivers by giving them the gift of knitting.
Knit for Life was started in 1997 after its founder, Tanya Parieaux, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. She found the therapeutic rhythm and focus of knitting took her mind off the stress and worry of her diagnosis. She now brings this therapeutic practice to 11 different hospitals and cancer centers in Western Washington.
Tanya shares that knitting is a way to escape the troubles and fears that accompany a cancer diagnosis. It takes the patients, and their caregivers, families and friends, away for a few hours a week and gives them something to do. “It’s a support group that really works,” Tanya says, because knitting creates an equal ground. It brings everyone to the same level so they can begin to communicate with one another and share stories while learning or practicing a fun and creative skill.
Whether you are an expert knitter or just beginning, Knit for Life offers knitting groups to include all ranges of experience and there is no cost to join. This way, anyone and everyone can get together to knit, heal and laugh. They have chairside, bedside and outpatient groups so that anyone can have access to knitting.
How can you help?
Knit for Life is our designated charity for our Refer-A-Friend program for the month of August. That means for every referral you send us, C. Don Filer Agency will donate $10.00 to the organization. Just by referring your friends and family to us, you will be supporting Knit for Life and the brave patients and caregivers who participate every week.
Want to do more? Tanya says they are always looking for volunteers to help at any of the sites listed on the website. Donations of any kind are appreciated, especially yarn and knitting needles.
