May flowers have started to bloom, which means it’s time for another Healthy Challenge! Whether you’re looking to get a fresh start on a lapsed New Year’s Resolution, readying yourself for summer activities, or looking to start a year-round habit, the Challenge is a great opportunity to achieve a healthier lifestyle.
Peggy Filer started the Healthy Challenge as a way for her students at Cedarcrest High School to develop healthier habits. Her husband, Bill, introduced the Challenge to our office so that we could do the same. Now, we’d like to extend an invitation to the Challenge to our clients and community!
The Healthy Challenge is built around fostering better habits. Participants set a SMART goal: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. For example, exercising another hour each week, drinking 8 glasses of water per day, or going out to eat only once a week.
After setting your goal, it’s important to plan and prepare for the challenge ahead; consider obstacles like time constraints and how you will overcome them. Peggy recommends finding a “health buddy” for support and accountability. It can be a great help to have someone to join you in packing a healthy lunch or going for walks during breaks.
Once you’ve set your goal and prepared for the Challenge, it’s time to take action! Here at the office we track our progress throughout the month on a calendar, placing a sticker for each day or week that we accomplish our goal. It’s a great way to get positive feedback and encouragement on the way to forming a habit.
Our Healthy Challenge only lasts a month, but it sets up participants with healthy habits that benefit them year-round. Working towards a healthy lifestyle isn’t limited to one month; you can continue meeting your health goal the rest of year, or take the Challenge on your own schedule!
All of us here at Filer Insurance wish you a healthy and happy May!
